Kidney stones: The terrible news about kale (and how to fix it)

May 29, 2013 § Leave a comment

I’ve drunk a lot of kale shakes. Kale is a healthy choice, except that it increases the risk of kidney stones. Darn.

While listening to The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, guest and Bulletproof Executive Dave Asprey reported that kale packs a lot of oxalic acid. That contributes to the development of kidney stones, one of the most painful things that can happen to you.

Fortunately, Asprey revealed the fix, too:

1. Buy dragon kale. It has a broadleaf. That’s preferred to the super curly kale. (You also get fewer insects that way.)

2. Boil or steam your kale. That will get rid of most of the oxalic acid. (Throw away the water after you steam it.)

3. Make your kale shake as usual but supplement with calcium. (He’s also a big fan of magnesium supplementation and recommends three times more magnesium than calcium.)
